A Typical Custom Prosthetic Eye or Scleral Shell Appointment at CEP

Welcome

We take hospitality seriously at Carolina Eye Prosthetics! When you first arrive for your appointment you can expect us to be there to greet you and help you feel comfortable as we take care of updating your patient information.

Fitting

Before one of our board-certified ocularists begins the fitting process they will take some time to check in with you. How are you feeling? Do you have any questions we can answer? Once you are ready, the ocularist will spend the next 1 – 2 hours hand-sculpting a completely customized wax model for your beautiful new scleral shell or prosthetic eye. This is not a painful process! In fact, most patients feel relaxed and start to enjoy the excitement as their prosthetic starts to take shape.

Take a Break!

After your fitting session, it is a great time for you to take a break for 1.5 – 2 hours while our team gets ready for the next step in the process. Our office is located in Burlington, NC, and has some of the best small town southern charm you could expect to find anywhere! Grab some lunch, relax, or take a quick tour of our downtown. We have the best recommendations on tap for all our clients.

Painting

When you get back, this is where things truly start to get fun and exciting for patients. We have already taken the time and expert attention to sculpting and fitting your prosthetic to the exact shape and contours of your eye socket. That is why it will fit and feel so great. Now we take the same amount of attention to detail and hand-paint your prosthetic eye. No one has your exact eye shape or color, but our artists can match your other eye perfectly in a way that will look amazing and help you feel so confident about your appearance!

Curing

After we have put the finishing touches on your new custom artificial eye or scleral shell, it needs to cure. This part of the process takes another 1 – 2 hours, so this will be your second and final break of the day.

Delivery

Once the prosthetic is cured, it’s yours! The fact that we can provide such a highly customized service for our clients in a single day is just one of the reasons that clients choose Carolina Eye Prosthetics. At this point, we will answer any last questions you have, cover all the things you will need to know about caring for your new eye, and we will get your follow-up appointment scheduled!
